FIRST OF ALL, hello! It’s been two years!
SECOND OF ALL, I want to emphasize that my skin is prob-lem-at-ic and super sensitive! But while living with combination skin (oily AND dry) and living in 0% humidity, I have found a few tricks and products to help keep my acne at bay and my skin from getting so dry that I….well…. break out some more.
After every shower I close my bathroom door and run the shower super hot and let the steam fill the room. This is a trick I learned helps for a bad cough and I figured I’d try it for opening my pores too! While the room is still steamy I dab my face with some Bio-Oil (ahhh-mazing! Recommended to me by my doctor) and then put moisturizer on. I also try to not lay on the moisturizer too heavily. A nice thin layer lets your skin breathe! I also try to stay away from moisturizers that double as acne treatment. I have VERY sensitive skin and the combination of chemicals is just… too much.
Note: this extra amount of moisture is nice in a dry climate…. definitely not necessary in a humid one!
2. Cleanse, Cleanse, Cleanse.
I wash my face two times a day. Once after my workout, some time before I do my makeup, and then again at the end of the night to get my makeup off before bed. Of course if I don’t work out that day I will only wash my face once at night because it is still important to not rid your face of all it’s natural oils. Sweat, however, is the exception.
Now let me tell you guys that I have been around the block when it comes to trying different face cleansers. I used to use the Clean and Clear Morning Burst in my teenage years, but as I have gotten older I have found it feels like I’m putting jell-o on my face. It’s just so thick! Another thing, when Lush released their campaign to “ban the bead” (which is found in products like Morning Burst) I have tried to stay away from all cleansing product with beads in them. That being said, Lush’s face washes have been too light for me and don’t give me the sensation that I got all of my face clean for how much $$ they are. Maybe I just haven’t found the right one?
So here’s my ride or die product, recommended to me by my doctor years ago:
3. Common sense…
I’ve found that less is more. Makeup-less workouts. Don’t sleep with makeup on (hard, I know). Wash your pillow cases regularly. Try not to touch your face and pick at acne. Try not to put makeup on immediately after washing your face or taking a hot shower, and if you have to, use a toner or splash face with cold water to close up those pores!
Of course we have cheat days with our skin and every skin-type needs different things but these are just some gentle habits of mine that I know help me, and for the most part, go for every other skin type too! Loving your skin is worth it in the long run!
